Every human person is a unique and irreplaceable gift created in the image and likeness of God and redeemed by the atoning sacrifice of Christ. For this reason, each person possesses an intrinsic dignity which must always be respected. Nevertheless, in the case of persons who experience same-sex attraction, this respect does not necessitate the approval of homosexual behaviour or the legal recognition of homosexual unions. To the contrary, the common good requires that laws recognize, protect and promote marriage — the indissoluble union of one man and one woman — as the foundation of the family, the primary unit of society. The Church must defend and promote these values, for the good of society and for the good of persons, including those who experience same-sex attraction.
