PRESS RELEASE

COLF asks Prime Minister Harper to redirect
the $6 000 000 promised to Planned Parenthood

In a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, dated October 4, 2011, the President of the Board of the Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF) expressed his consternation with the conservative government’s decision to finance the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) through a grant from CIDA.

“IPPF works aggressively to dismantle abortion laws in countries where abortion is prohibited and to have abortion recognized as a universal human “right”, says Bishop Gerald Wiesner, O.M.I.  It would be naïve, therefore, to think that Canadian tax dollars will not be used by IPPF to promote abortion in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Mali, Sudan, and Tanzania... under the guise of “education”.

”COLF reminds Prime Minister Harper that “abortion destroys lives” and invites him to be attentive to the thousands of post-abortive women who are now speaking out about their suffering.

Since “IPPF does not meet the criteria” of the Muskoka Maternal/Child Health Initiative, Bishop Wiesner invites the Canadian Government to “redirect this six million dollar grant to organizations which truly respect the life and dignity of women and children, at every stage.

COLF is co-sponsored by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus. It promotes respect for human life and dignity, and the essential role of the family.

Please see below for the complete text of the letter.

Families, did you know? Love is calling your children

fam-018-e At a time when all the baptized are called to actively engage in the new evangelization, the Catholic Organization for Life and Family offers an enthusiastic look at vocations in its 2011Message to families, entitled “Families, did you know? Love is calling your children”.

Unique and irreplaceable, every child conceived in the womb is called by God to a unique mission. It is in the family, first, that boys and girls learn to know and to trust Him, as they discern their call to love, and, in imitation of Jesus’ self‐giving love, to give themselves in marriage, the priesthood, consecrated life or apostolic celibacy.

COLF hopes this new publication will support parents, teachers, pastors and catechists in their important work of education. May it help them to challenge the young, who are so often in search of meaning and ideals!

work + love = holiness!
fam-017-e2 As the world progressively overcomes a serious economic crisis, the Catholic Organization for Life and Family offers an important reflection on the grandeur and dignity of work. Christians know that the main ingredient that gives any labour its value - whether it is performed outside the home or within the family - whether it is volunteer or paid work, physical or intellectual - is the love with which it is performed. This is an astonishing discovery, which allows us to perceive another facet of work; one that is unexpected and invisible but very real. Since the beginning of the world, human work has been part of God’s plan. It is an occasion for us to become co-creators and co-redeemers. Jesus calls us in our daily work to ask us to become his partners, to work for Him and with Him. He wants to bring divine meaning to all the hours that we devote every day to work and to our families, in joy as well as in tears. He is counting on us!

Blessed John-Paul II: Prophet of Life and the Family
The beatification of Pope John Paul II provides a new occasion for the Catholic Organization for Life and Family to pay tribute to the one who was, from 1978 to 2005, the “sweet Christ on earth” as saint Catherine of Sienna affectionately called the Holy Father. It is with much joy that we renew our 2005 tribute, titled “John Paul II: Prophet of Life and Family”.
